ARMANDO RODRIGUES: ACHO QUE NINGUÉM QUER VOLTAR AO ANTIGAMENTE
Após um longo interregno, não deixa de ser curioso que o nosso convidado de hoje seja novamente um cartógrafo. Afinal, é graças a muito do labor destes homens e
mulheres que a Orientação é aquilo que é nos dias de hoje. Ouçamos, pois, Armando Rodrigues.
Neste quarto episódio da série “FPO 20 Anos”, o Orientovar orgulha-se de apresentar Armando Gonçalves Rodrigues, nascido a 20 de Fevereiro de 1960, em Segude,
Monção, actualmente a residir em Baião. Casado e pai de um filho, sócio-gerente da empresa Armando Rodrigues Unipessoal Lda., é federado na FPO com o n.º
1650, sócio-fundador da APORT – Associação Portuguesa de Orientação, sócio-fundador do CIMO - Clube Ibérico de Montanhismo e Orientação e sócio do
FUZOSCLUBE.
É, contudo, na área Cartografia que se tem distinguido o seu trabalho. Cartógrafo de nível V, frequentou os seguintes cursos de cartografia: -1988 Curso Internacional
de Cartografia (IOF). – 1996 cartógrafo de nível IV; – 1997 Clinic de Cartografia (IOF); - 2003 cartógrafo de nível V (FPO). Os mapas executados (cartografia e
desenho) até hoje são tantos que, confessa, nem os contabiliza.
Chegávamos a ter “balizas” em áreas “brancas” das cartas
Orientovar - Tomou contacto com a Orientação há três décadas atrás. Como era fazer Orientação no princípio dos anos 80 do século passado?
Armando Rodrigues - Comecei a fazer Orientação como parte da instrução dos Fuzileiros, onde a leitura das Cartas Militares e as provas desportivas eram inerentes à
instrução. Como quase todos os veteranos da modalidade, a Orientação era feita em Cartas Militares à escala 1:25 000, o que era um pouco mais complicado que
actualmente, pois chegávamos a ter “balizas” em áreas “brancas” das cartas, por exemplo, ou sinalética “árvore isolada” e lá tínhamos que encontrar a dita, com
referências a 300 metros de distância. Era bem mais difícil. A minha primeira prova foi na Mata da Machada, em Vale de Zebro, no dia 18 de Maio de 1981 e, como é
óbvio … ganhei (modesto).
Orientovar - Nos primórdios, a Orientação já era entendida como uma modalidade competitiva de futuro, ou seja, imaginava-se que a modalidade “tinha pernas para
andar”?
Armando Rodrigues - Desde que estou ligado à Orientação - e isso foi logo que comecei a praticar com os elementos que compunham a equipa representativa da
Marinha nas Forças Armadas (os meus agradecimentos ao Comandante Camilo de Mendonça)-, fiquei logo a perceber que esta modalidade tinha uma componente
que não se encontrava no Atletismo. À partida não sabemos o que vamos encontrar e só dependemos de nós próprios para o resultado final. Cada dia que passava
havia uma maior adesão de orientistas e isso notava-se de prova para prova. Claro que teve sempre “pernas para andar” e os Campeonatos Mundiais das Forças
Armadas assim o evidenciavam, tal como as informações dos nórdicos que se deslocavam ao nosso País para a divulgação da modalidade e com os quais aprendi
muito.
Nem imaginava que estava ali o traçar do destino que mudou a minha vida
Orientovar - De que forma acompanhou a evolução da modalidade e quais os passos que reputa de mais importantes?
Armando Rodrigues - Acompanho a modalidade quase desde o início, competindo como atleta, executando acções de divulgação e formação de professores para a
introdução da Orientação nas Escolas, viajando com os elementos como o Comandante Camilo de Mendonça, Francisco Pereira e Horácio Ferreira entre outros.
Enquanto uns procediam às palestras, competia-me elaborar o mapa das instalações para depois de tirar fotocópias e procedermos à parte prática da acção de
formação. Um dos momentos mais importantes neste processo foi a criação da APORT e a organização dos primeiros Campeonatos Nacionais, altura em que passei
da área da competição e formação para a da organização de provas. Na realidade, fui um dos elementos que organizou os primeiros Campeonatos Nacionais da
modalidade em Portugal.
Orientovar - Nesse processo evolutivo, onde é que o “Armando Rodrigues – atleta” passa para "segundo plano" e dá lugar ao “Armando Rodrigues – cartógrafo”?
Armando Rodrigues - Fazia parte como Orientista saber como se elaborava um mapa e quais eram os critérios na execução do mesmo, o que ajudava imenso. Depois
de uma aula de cartografia, a abordagem na prova seguinte já era diferente, mais confiante, corria melhor, melhores resultados. Quando passei à organização de
provas deixei de poder competir, pois era incompatível, embora tenha começado também a desenhar mapas (OCAD) por uma mera escolha de voluntários. Estavam
em Portugal dois suecos (Rolf Anderson e Sven Kindborg) a fazer uma acção de formação e traziam com eles uma cópia de um programa de desenho por
computador, acabadinho de desenvolver na Suiça de autoria do Hans Steinegger (já falecido). Como não conseguiam ligar a mesa digitalizadora, o Comandante
Camilo de Mendonça nomeou-me voluntário “à força” para a missão. E foi assim, sem perceber nada de computadores, que dei por mim a trabalhar num PC do qual
nem sabia onde estava o botão de ligar, quanto mais o “enter”. Nem imaginava que estava ali o traçar do destino que mudou a minha vida. Fomos dos primeiros a
fazer desenho computorizado a nível mundial, pois anteriormente desenhava-se manualmente e sempre que se actualizava um mapa este tinha de ser feito todo de
novo.
Entendo que será necessário fazer sensibilização para que se apure mais a uniformização de critérios
Orientovar - O que vê de tão fascinante ou desafiante na cartografia?
Armando Rodrigues - A cartografia é uma arte (citação desconhecida). Não existem dois mapas iguais, é sempre um desafio. Ainda hoje, depois de todos estes anos,
no dia que antecede o início do trabalho de campo dou por mim a pensar na forma de melhor referenciar os elementos, para que cada mapa que faço seja sempre
melhor em qualidade que o anterior. Depois há ainda o contacto com a natureza e o conhecer sítios maravilhosos.
Orientovar - Como avalia a evolução da cartografia em Portugal e qual o seu actual momento?
Armando Rodrigues - A cartografia tem evoluído muito, pois o grau de exigência é cada vez maior, tanto por parte dos orientistas. como pelas organizações das
provas. Mas ainda bem que assim é. Esta evolução do manual para o digital faz com que hoje tudo seja mais perfeito e menos trabalhoso
no desenho e acho que ninguém quer voltar ao antigamente. Torna-se gratificante, por exemplo, chegar ao fim de um Portugal O' Meeting 2011 e verificar que os
orientistas fazem bons tempos e não existem críticas negativas aos mapas. É uma sensação boa. Existem em Portugal cartógrafos com elevado mérito mas entendo
que será necessário fazer sensibilização para que se apure mais a uniformização de critérios, o que talvez passe pela criação de uma Associação de Cartógrafos, em
que todos façam parte da solução e não do problema. Como membro do Departamento de Cartografia da recente Direcção da Federação Portuguesa de Orientação,
tudo farei para o acrescento de qualidade nos mapas em Portugal.
Pena é que os nossos governantes e alguns órgãos de comunicação social não vejam a modalidade como sinónimo de bem estar
Orientovar - É um homem que está presente em muitas provas um pouco por todo o País através dos seus mapas, mas a sua presença física é uma raridade. Porquê?
Armando Rodrigues - É verdade, “mea culpa”, são na verdade raras as vezes em que me desloco aos locais das provas. Acho que todos os cartógrafos devem sentir o
“feedback” no final das mesmas, da parte dos orientistas em relação ao seu trabalho, mas devido ao volume de mapas, aos prazos a cumprir, às deslocações cada vez
mais dispendiosas e ao facto de querer estar mais tempo com a família - pois como cartógrafo ausento-me muito tempo -, não me tem sido possível.
Orientovar - Continua a fazer mapas, tem ajudado a dinamizar a Orientação de Precisão, nomeadamente em Baião e em toda a região Norte de Portugal e está
actualmente ligado ao Departamento de Cartografia da FPO. Que avaliação faz do actual momento da Orientação portuguesa, no seu todo?
Armando Rodrigues - Tenho contribuído com a minha “mais valia” para a dinamização da modalidade sempre que me é possível e continuarei a fazê-lo. Quanto ao
estado da Orientação em Portugal acho que é bom, bastando para tal ver a quantidade de provas do calendário nacional. Com todas as crises que o nosso País
atravessa, continuamos a ter muita gente a aderir à modalidade, pois o contacto com a natureza e o desporto sadio ultrapassa todas as barreiras. Pena é que os
nossos governantes e alguns órgãos de comunicação social não vejam a modalidade como sinónimo de bem estar, quer físico quer psicológico, já para não falar do
aspecto financeiro.
É fundamental o reconhecimento de todos os que trabalham em prol da modalidade
Orientovar - Agora que a Federação Portuguesa de Orientação celebra o seu vigésimo aniversário, gostaria de formular um desejo para os próximos 20 anos?
Armando Rodrigues - Desejo as maiores felicidades para os novos Corpos Sociais e que continuem a fazer um bom trabalho. Para que possamos continuar a assistir
ao crescimento da Orientação é fundamental o reconhecimento de todos os que trabalham em prol da modalidade, respeitando a opinião dos outros, pois por muito
que se queira nem sempre somos donos da verdade. Um abraço a todos os Orientistas e o meu louvor público ao Fernando Costa, do Grupo Desportivo dos Quatro
Caminhos, pela abordagem que tem pela modalidade, ao Joaquim Margarido, pelo empenho na divulgação da Orientação em Portugal e, claro, não poderia esquecer
o Comandante Camilo de Mendonça, porque na verdade foi ele o meu mentor.
